Product Overview

WORKSHOP NOTICEECU Calibration / IMA Coding Required

This injector requires 6-8 digit calibration code programming (IMA / QR code) into the vehicle ECU (using Bosch KTS, Lexia/Diagbox or equivalent diagnostic equipment) following replacement to balance cylinder fuel delivery and prevent DTC P0300 misfire codes.

The Hitachi 16625-AA040 (Subaru OE 16625-AA041 / 16625-AA042) is the original factory high-pressure fuel pump for Subaru FA20 DIT 2.0L Turbocharged Boxer engines. Actuated by the camshaft on the left-hand cylinder head, this pump generates up to 200 bar (20 MPa) direct injection pressure. Factory-equipped on the 2015-2021 Subaru WRX and 2014-2018 Forester XT, it incorporates an integrated electronic fuel metering solenoid. Common failure symptoms include cold-start extended cranking, high-RPM hesitations, and rail pressure collapse codes P0087 and P0089.

Before You Order

BOXER ENGINE CRANKCASE FUEL DILUTION & HIGH-RPM STUMBLE: On the Subaru FA20 DIT boxer platform, a degraded plunger seal on the horizontally mounted high-pressure pump leaks raw gasoline directly into the driver-side cylinder head oil return passages. Because boxer oil galleys are low, fuel dilution quickly washes rod bearings and triggers oil light flicker at idle. Replace immediately if oil smells of fuel or DTC P0087/P0172 is stored.

Installation Tips

Tools needed: Line flare wrench for high-pressure fuel pipe nut, 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension, Torque wrench calibrated for 10-40 N·m, Clean engine oil or assembly lube for O-ring and roller tappet, Safety glasses and clean rags for fuel depressurization

  1. Disconnect vehicle negative battery terminal; depressurize low-pressure fuel circuit before service.
  2. Wrap shop towels around fuel line fitting; loosen flare nut slowly to vent residual high-pressure fuel.
  3. Disconnect wiring harness plug from spill control solenoid.
  4. Disconnect low-pressure fuel hose quick-coupler.
  5. Loosen the two mounting bolts evenly in half-turn increments to relieve camshaft spring load.
  6. Remove pump from left-hand cylinder head; extract roller lifter and inspect for wear or pitting.
  7. Clean mounting surface; coat new pump O-ring seal with clean synthetic motor oil.
  8. Rotate engine until driving camshaft lobe is on base circle (lowest lift point).
  9. Install lubricated roller lifter; seat pump square into cylinder head bore.
  10. Torque mounting bolts alternately in progressive steps to 12 N·m.
  11. Thread high-pressure steel line flare nut hand-tight; torque to 35 N·m.
  12. Reconnect fuel lines and wiring plug; cycle key on 3 times and inspect for leaks.
Tips & Warnings:
  • Horizontal Boxer Sealing: Ensure the O-ring is fully seated before tightening bolts; horizontal installation can pinch dry O-rings causing oil leaks.
  • Immediate Oil Change Mandate: If replacing due to fuel smell in engine oil, perform complete oil and filter replacement to protect boxer rod bearings.
  • Base Circle Cam Alignment: Rotate engine to base circle prior to torquing down pump to avoid stripping cylinder head aluminum threads.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes & Fault Protocols

Common diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) triggered when this common rail injector experiences wear, circuit faults, or calibration drift:

P0087Critical

Fuel Rail / System Pressure Too Low

Excessive internal backleak from worn control valve seats drops common rail pressure below target under engine load.

P0201 - P0208High

Injector Circuit Malfunction / Open Circuit

Solenoid coil resistance drift (0.2-0.5 Ω) or piezo stack degradation triggers driver stage shutdown on affected cylinders.

P0300 / P0301+High

Cylinder Misfire & Balancing Deviation

Carbon-clogged nozzle spray holes or missing IMA calibration causes uneven cylinder contribution. Recode ECM and verify washer seating.

P0088High

Fuel Rail / System Pressure Too High

Spill line backpressure or stuck metering valve prevents rail depressurization, creating overpressure risks under load.
