Why cross-referencing injectors is harder than it looks

A common rail injector is identified by three independent physical stamps: the control valve code (F00VCxxxxx or F00RJxxxxx), the nozzle code (DLLAxxxPxxxx), and the injector body length with sealing washer OD. Two injectors that share the same BOSCH catalog SKU can have different valve codes if they are sold for different engine platforms. Two injectors from different SKUs can share the same valve code but use different nozzles, making them NOT interchangeable. The cross-reference process walks each of these checks in turn.

Step 1: Identify the original SKU

Locate the BOSCH part number stamped on the injector body, typically on a metal plate riveted to the solenoid body. The format is a 10-digit code beginning with 0445 (common rail injector) or 0438 (unit injector). For each engine platform there is a primary SKU plus 1–3 sister SKUs that share the same control valve but differ in nozzle stamping. Step 2: Verify the control valve code

The control valve (also called the SCV or IMV depending on generation) regulates the rail pressure at the injector inlet. BOSCH stamps a 9-character code on the solenoid connector cap, formatted as F00VCxxxxx or F00RJxxxxx. The first three characters identify the BOSCH subfamily; the last six identify the calibration.

  • F00VC codes cover CRI2/CRIN2 generation injectors (most 2007–2015 passenger and light commercial platforms).
  • F00RJ codes cover CRIN3 and CRIN4 generation injectors (2012+ heavy commercial and modern passenger diesel).
  • F00R codes (3-character prefix) cover pre-2007 third-generation solenoid injectors.

Cross-reference the F00VC/F00RJ code against the Dieselcatalog.online index. Sister SKUs share the same F00VC/F00RJ code; if the code differs, the injectors are NOT interchangeable even if the catalog SKU looks similar.

Step 3: Verify the nozzle code

The nozzle (sometimes called the injection valve or spray tip) carries a 9-character stamping beginning with DLLA, followed by a numeric code and a letter suffix. The suffix matters:

  • No suffix or “+”: standard spray pattern for the engine platform.
  • “A” or “B”: modified spray pattern for a specific emission tier (Euro 4 vs Euro 5 for the same engine block).
  • “P”: hole-type nozzle (multi-hole), used in engines where atomization requires multiple spray cones.

If the original nozzle code is not publicly disclosed by BOSCH (which is the case for many current-generation injectors), confirm by physical inspection: pull the injector and read the stamping on the nozzle body. Do not infer from the catalog SKU alone.

Step 4: Verify injector length and sealing washer OD

Two injectors can share the same control valve and nozzle code but have different body lengths or sealing washer outer diameters (typically 14 mm, 16 mm, or 19 mm). A 2 mm difference in length prevents the hold-down clamp from seating correctly. A 2 mm difference in washer OD allows combustion leakage past the seal. Measure the original injector’s overall length from the solenoid face to the tip of the nozzle, and verify the washer OD with calipers before installation.

Step 5: Cross-check the engine build plate

The engine build plate (riveted to the cylinder block or rocker cover) lists the engine family code, emission tier, and production date. Confirm the replacement injector matches:

  • Engine family code (e.g. M47N, EA189, OM646, D2676LF, YC6JA).
  • Emission standard (Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5, EPA Tier 4i).
  • Production year range (some platform revisions updated the injector mid-cycle).

What NOT to cross-reference on

  • Vehicle make/model alone: BMW 320d E46 and E90 both use M47-family engines but the injectors differ in valve code and IMA calibration.
  • OE part number alone: a single OE number can map to two different BOSCH SKUs for different production batches.
  • Connector shape alone: solenoid connector geometry is shared across multiple BOSCH generations, so it is not a unique identifier.
  • Look-alike SKUs in the same catalog: 0445110062 and 0445110063 differ only in IMA calibration code and are NOT interchangeable without ECU re-flash.

Tools you need

  • Digital calipers (0–200 mm, ±0.02 mm) for length and washer OD measurement.
  • Strong light + magnifier for reading the nozzle stamping.
  • Build plate reference for the specific engine family.
  • Dieselcatalog.online (free index) for valve code lookup.
